The recent, rapid rise in the use of digital technology offers new opportunities for participation in democracy and the decision-making process. It is changing relationships between citizens and public institutions, thus expanding political participation. Research shows that a growing number of young people are using technology—such as social media for mobile organizing and establishing a direct communication between constituents and elected officials. However the type and quality of their political participation, and therefore its impact on democratization, varies.
