Europe is increasingly seeking to be transparent in its approach to fair trade. How can we address potential imbalances in trade and bring greater fairness? How can Europe support marginalised small producers, whether these are independent family businesses, or grouped in associations or co-operatives? Can Europe enable them to move from income insecurity and poverty to economic self-sufficiency and ownership? Before being able to address these issues this workshop will address the essential question of ‘what is fair trade?’. It will then look at different models adopted around the world promoting fair trade with concern for the social, economic and environmental well-being of marginalised small producers without maximising profit at their expense.
